The First Monday in May

The first Monday in May is the biggest event in fashion. What I like about the Met Gala is that function is totally thrown out the window. It's all about fashion for art's sake. Many of the fashions on the pink carpet are totally outrageous and completely impractical. This years Met Gala was no exception, especially since the theme of the current exhibit is Camp: Notes on Fashion. The designers and celebrities did not disappoint.

When Scarlett Newman, freelance fashion writer was interviewed by NPR, she was asked to describe camp, she replied, "Camp is artifice. Camp is exaggeration, boisterousness all wrapped up into a visual aesthetic. It's irreverent. It's - it has no limits." Speaking of no limits. This annual fundraiser is by invitation only. A single ticket, if you are lucky enough to get invited, would set you back $30,000. A corporate table costs $275,000, but that won't guarantee you a seat. You still have to be "approved."

Cardi B wearing Thom Brown. This is the ultimate in opulence and grandeur. Here's a blood red tulle organza and be-feathered gown with a ten foot train. It's decorated with 30,000 feathers (hopefully they were harvested sustainably... sorry, but that's where my mind goes!) and took 35 people 2,000 hours to create. And we have to talk about the details around the breast area. It's made with bugle beads and where the nipples would be, were additional jewels, but they are not mere paste (or pasties). They were genuine 44 carrot rubies worth $250,000 each! OK, I have to say. It's a bit obscene in it's extravagance & excess.

It would not be complete without the Queen of Camp. Here's Bette Midler as a "Social Butterfly."

If there was any dress of the evening that I would wear, it would be this magical garb by Gucci worn by English singer, Florence Welch. She is the vocalist and songwriter of the indie rock band Florence and the Machine.
