From Archangels to Pontiffs

Katie Perry's Archangel by Versace

I'm not big fan of award ceremonies and shows. I can't tell you the last time I watched the Oscars and I don't think I ever saw the Emmys or the Grammys, but I like to look at the gowns that stood out the day after the event... even if I don't really know who half the people are. (Years ago, a friend described me as being a refugee from popular culture... it remains true to this day)

The red carpet that I've always been especially interested in is the Met Gala when the realms of fashion, film, music and art come together to raise money for the Met's Costume Institute. There's a different theme every year, centered around the latest exhibit. Particular fun past themes were; Punk: Chaos to Couture and China: Through the Looking Glass. 2018's exhibition theme was Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.

What I enjoy the most are the more outrageous costumes that are purely art for art's sake or just tongue in cheek.

Here's a peek of some of the more extravagant and unconventional designs of the evening.

And yes, being true to my refugee status, I had to unapologetically google four of the stars.

Feel free to comment below and see you next week for Fashion Friday.

Designer for Gucci Alessandro Michele with Lana Del Rey and Jared Leto

This Trio was a favorite of mine.

I love the soft Virgin Mary blue contrasting with the ivory, the martyred sacred heart, the rich brocade and that silly feathered halo.

Zendaya in Versace searching for the Holy Grail

Rihanna in Maison Margiela's interpretation of an ensemble befitting a Pontiff

Lena Waithe said she felt like a gay goddess in her epic Gala Pride cape by Wes Gordon

Not quite sure how this relates to the theme, but Frances McDormand steals the show in Valentino with a Philip Treacy headpiece

Chadwick Boseman in Versace

After finally seeing him in Black Panther, I couldn't leave Chadwick Boseman off this list.

SZA in Versace

Since I recently posted two blogs on fashions inspired by the Wizard of Oz, I couldn't help but think that this would be a perfect outfit for Glinda the Good Witch.

And if you don't agree, just look at the view of this dress below.

It does more than merely change

how the world perceives us.

It changes how we perceive ourselves.”
